I have come across a lot of blog posts about big eggs. The simple fact that chickens lay eggs is miraculous enough, but when a hen lays a really big one, it's post-worthy for even an experienced chicken farmer.
I did it myself, back in the early days. But lately I've considered myself a bit too worldly, a tad too experienced, a smidge too cosmopolitan and sophisticated to get all excited about a big egg.
Until today. Until this really, really, really big egg.
Large eggs should weigh at least 56 grams, extra-large at least 64, and jumbo at least 70. This egg weighed 96 grams.
Here's the proof.
Holy smokes, that's a big egg.

That is huge! I've gotten some big ones, but I think my biggest topped out at just over 80g. Which breed laid that one?
It was a Buff Orpington. Yowza! I still can't get over how big it is - or I should say WAS, since we ate it! It was a double yolker. It came from one of the new pullets, and I sure hope (for her sake) she doesn't make a habit of it!

I just have to tell you how much I love your blog ! We're from Campbell River, and are looking at buying acreage between here and Courtenay hopefully toward the end of next year. We're just starting our homesteading/farming journey, but are both very excited, and reading about your experience makes me look forward to when we can do the same :)

Actually, I figured it might have two yolks. I wonder if with living the good life, if egg size (and subsequent chicken size) will trend upwards, but then I remember reading that pullets frequently lay double yolk eggs on their way to becoming big girls.
But 96 grams!
That's impressive. And slightly painful to behold.
I have never had an egg that big - but we've had lot's of double yolkers - mostly from the pullets. They freak my H out.

Whoie, that was a big'un! My bantams are starting to lay. Some eggs have streaks of blood on the outside shell, that's an ouch to me! Poor babies.
My Red Star just laid one that weighed 104 grams!!!!!…Poor thing shouldn't be walking but she is..She is our smallest chicken by weight and lays the biggest eggs!..We have 2 Red Stars, 2Buff Orpingtons and 2 Rhode Island Reds...
