Yes, those out-of-focus fuzzy yellow pompoms are chicks - our first ever hatched by broody hens. We're old hands at the incubator business but had never let Mother Nature and her crew of Broody Hens handle the job, so when two of the Buffs became persistently broody a few weeks ago, Kim decided to give them a dozen eggs each to sit on, just to see what might happen.
Those hens deserve a medal for Dedication to Service. Although they would probably be just as happy for a chance to stretch their legs...

Yeah! I'm all for doing it the natural way...it's got to be so much easier. On the other hand, I understand that hen-raised chicks are less friendly than hand-raised ones. I suppose you could make a point of handling the chicks, but I don't think I'd like to try to get between that mama and her babies!

Yay! How cool is that! My Bellina has a bad case of broody right now, and I'm tempted to put a couple goose eggs under her. Perhaps I need to give it a go!
OMG!! That's adorable!! Good for them, now will they be less broody for a spell or will they brood right back up again?
Isn't it amazing what happens when we step back and see what nature can do?
Incubating is great in it's own right, don't get me wrong, but it lacks the absolute astonishment of hearing quiet cheeps coming from underneath a full grown hen.
It's like seeing a cow up close for the first time, or watching your hen lay an egg, start to finish. It's a sense of connecting in an unobtrusive way, to something a lot bigger than us.
It's so beautiful to actually see it happen the natural way! Go you for giving it a try!
